Airplane Engines

most advanced airplane engines?
which company makes the most advanced airplane engines in the world for commercial aircraft? for military aircraft?
what makes these engines better than the rest?
It depends on what you mean by "advanced". If you mean just raw power, the raptor engines above mentioned above put out a belived to be about 35,000 f/lbs. What is really impressive about the raptor is the weight/thrust ratio and the ability to use thrust vectoring. Top speed of the raptor is officially about 1.8 mach, but believed to be over mach 2 with afterburners.
The outdated sr-71 used pratt-whitney j58-p4 engines that EACH produced an announced 32,500 f/lbs of pressure but real output is believed to be over 35,000. engines to have a cruise speed of mach 3.2 with max speeds alleged to be over mach 5.
pulse wave detonation engines are used on "black" planes. They reach hypersonic speeds with higher efficiency and fewer parts than traditional jet engines like those used on the raptor. Top speed is believed to be appx mach 6-10
Scramjets are still in experimental stage, but also allow hypersonic speeds. Projections believe we can eventually get orbital velocity out of a scramjet. So far current prototypes require a MINIMUM speed of mach 4.3 just to be functional.
EDIT: I agree with the other guys, what makes an engine "advanced" is a matter of efficiency, how "green" it is, availibility of fuel, intended use, etc Checked out the GE90-115b Fly B mentioned. It is the largest, engine and has the record for range and for thrust. Very impressive!

Rotec Radial Engine Flybaby Aircraft
Airplane Engines????????????????????????????????
Why do some airliners have the engine under the wing and some at the back of the plane. Continental has it under the wing and American Airlines has it in the back. Also if one engine blows can the plane be properly flown and landed. I just flew and i would really like to know.
Powerplant configuration on an aircraft has nothing to do with the airline flying them. The design is the product of the aircraft manufacturer. Most assuredly, a multi-engined airliner can fly and be landed safely with one or more engines failed. If all engines have failed, the aircraft becomes a glider and the pilot maneuvers the aircraft into position for landing at the best location available within gliding distance.
In 1983, Air Canada Flight 143, a Boeing 767-200, a twin-engined wide-body airliner lost all power in both engines. The crew flew the aircraft to a safe landing at an abandoned Canadian Forces airbase near Gimli, Manitoba with no loss of life or serious injuries. The event is celebrated in the pilot community as the "Gimli Glider". Note that that was 27 years ago and I don't recall another event like it since then.
All airline transport pilots are required to undergo a thorough physical examination and flight test in a full-motion simulator of the type they are typically assigned every six months. These flight tests include many emergency situations including engine failures in which the pilots are expected to respond with the established procedures and land at the safest location available. The cockpits in these simulators are exact replicas of an actual aircraft and is coupled to a computer that replicates the aircraft flight characteristics including a very realistic visual display of the outside weather and terrain environment.
It is literally true that the most dangerous phase of your trip is the drive to the airport on the American highways and city streets. When was the last time YOU were required to demonstrate your driving skills in an emergency to an official evaluator? Most likely never. Your physical examination was probably no more demanding than to show your ability to distinguish between a stop sign and a cow.
Here are a couple of books that should answer any questions you may have:
"How Airliners Fly" and "All You Ever Wanted to Know About Flying: The Passenger's Guide to How Airliners Fly", both by Julien Evans, an airline captain.
Now you know...really.
