Want a P-51 Mustang RC model?
I'm looking for a birthday present for my boyfriend who's an airplane nut (he's also an engineering grad student). He wants an RC airplane kit; he liked looking at the old P-51 Mustangs when we went to AirVenture this year so I was thinking of a model of one of those. Can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks.
Since he's an engineer he likes building stuff, so preferably a kit and not a "ready-to-fly" one.
If your boyfriend is new to the RC stuff then you can get him a Hangar 9 P-51D Mustang PTS trainer aircraft. It looks good and can be flown by first timers. You can go to Hangar 9's website at www.hangar-9.com and find a store near your location to buy a kit.
You have a choice of either buying a model which would run on electric power or one which would run on fuel (its a special mixture). I would suggest you buy the fuel version known as the glow powered keeping in view that he likes real planes as the glow powered ones have minature engines and make realistic noise rather than electric ones which sound like an electric motor and not at all like a real plane though they are a lot cleaner and easier to operate.
I would STRONGLY recommend that you make your boyfriend go to a local hobby store (after you have surprised him with the gift) and find out where he can find a RC club nearby and GET instructions. This is very important as this is a serious hobby and if proper care isn't taken it can cause loss of property and a serious injury.
Response to additional detail:
I would again suggest that you go for that model. Reason being that it'll be his first plane so he can crash it and run it to the ground and gain experience. on the side he can buy a bigger kit of a P51 and build it from scratch. And maybe he can also fit a gas engine on it which will then be his pride and joy. A traditional scale P51 is not a trainer and cannot be used as a first plane. Maybe as a fourth or a fifth plane as they are difficult to handle. The PTS that i recommended is good in the sense that it has additional gear on it for one to learn and once enough experience is gained then those can be removed.
