pitch of a boat propeller?
How do I find the pitch of a prop,how do i measure it?
A little more information would be helpful. But in general. Pitch is measured in inches. It is the distance the tip of the propeller would travel in one revolution through the water. The angle of the blade determines this distance. The higher the incidence of the angle the higher the pitch. Markings on props will give the diameter if the prop first then an X (read as by) then the pitch. For example 13-3/4 X 17 RH
THE RH means Right hand rotation. Props can be Right or Left hand rotation.
Most Props will have the size marked on the prop. In some cases its stamped into the metal, on others it's molded in relief into the metal. If you look at the side of the hub (where the blades meet the hub), You might see 14X16 stamped into the side of a bronze 3 blade prop for an inboard. On a Mercruiser it might be on the side, but more likely it will be under the splined retainer/nut washer on the end of the hub. Like 48-72762-A4 19P meaning its a 19" pitch. OMC and Volvo use similar markings. However there are several company's that manufacture propellers so there can be other ways of doing this as well. Now, I guess if you had the proper equipment you could measure the angle of the blade and then calculate the pitch. But I've always just gone by the markings. I won't get into repitched propellers.
