propeller pitch?
Is there any way for a layman to find out the pitch on a boat prop?
Your prop should be stamped with numbers on the hub. The size of a prop is described using those two numbers (such as 14 X 19). The first number designates the diameter in inches (14"), and the second number designates the propeller pitch (19"). The second number (pitch) describes distance in inches you will be "pushed" forward by 1 revolution of the prop (theoretically as other factors must be considered as well).

What size propeller do I need.. Sunbird Stinger boat (130 hp 4 cyl OMC Cobra) planes badly?
I have a 1995 Sunbird Stinger bowrider. Its got the 4 cylinder 130 hp GM block in it (replaced last year).. cobra outdrive.
Right now, it has a 14.5 x 17 quicksilver prop on it. The boat doesn't plane very well.. bow up for a long time plowing water even with trim down.. It also doesnt have a great top speed.. 30- 35 depending on load.. I'm alright with the speed, if thats what its going to be, but the planing is an issue! I'm thinking its all in the prop.. too big pitch/diameter? Too small? What size should I get?

Selecting a prop is an art, but the prop you have is about what I'd expect for your boat. It's often a hull design that causes that bow up ride, and prop changes will only change it a little. Make sure the drive is in the full down position. With a 4 cly. I'd expect something in the MPH range of 30 to 35 .......The standard way to check the prop is RPM of 4800-5000, at full throttle. But with no "breakout" cavitation on stop to plane......a little lower pitch like a 14 1/2 by 15 might help just a smidgen. But expect the bow to come up. Fins like the Dolphin don't help much ether. Moving weight forward, things like extra fuel tanks or coolers only help a little......get the idea. This is true for Mercruiser,OMC and Volvo, it's the hull design.....and many deep V hulls have this problem,,,,,,,,particularly in 17-19ft. boats but I've seen it in 24 and 28 ft. With 5.7L Mercruisers.....
Sorry I can't be of more help......but you can try some of the thing i mentioned,,who knows you might be able to get just the right mix to make it better.....
