300zx performance question?
i own a 94 300zx nonturbo and was looking into making it a bit quicker. I dont want to add any horsepower, but i am really interested in re-doing the gears in the rear end instead. I would like gears that would give me quicker 0-60 times, but still offer me good gas mileage. I would at least like top car to top out at a hundred mph, right now it will hit 137 mph. I want to keep the motor stock, but want to change gears instead. I know that jeeps and off road vehicle use super low gears and can climb over anything. My friend has a rock crawler buggy powered by a 120hp motor that climbs over anything. Is the same idea applied to sports cars? if so what gears would be advised for someone like myself
All your ratios are like this for a manual transmission
1st 3.21:1
2nd 1.93
3rd 1.30:1
4th 1.00:1
5th 0.75:1
Axle ratio 3.69:1
Final-drive ratio 2.78:1
so your current rear end is a 3.69 to 1
currently in top gear. if you can get your engine to 6000 rmp's you should be able to go 147
That is if you have stock side tires.
but you say it will only hit 137 now. which if it is an stick shift means you will only be around 5550 rmp's
sticking to those rpm numbers. for a top speed of 100mph you will need a rear end ratio of right at 5 to one.
I'm assuming the reason you can only go 137 is because the engine is out of power and you foot is to the floor. but because you will have lower gears. it should definitely hit 6000rpm's. so with a ratio of 5 to 1 you should be able to go 109mph
I dont know how much money you will have to put into the car for new gears, but it wont be cheap for your axles.
it will definitely accelerate faster, there is no reason to stop it. you will just have to shift alot quicker.
your gas mileage is going to suffer because now you should be somewhere around 2850rpm's at 70mph. with a rear end of 5 to 1. you will have to go 3850rmp's to go 70 mph. thats really high, almost 4000, to be cruising down the interstate.
but you can always go with a more conservative ratio of somewhere around 4 to 1
you can use this online calculator, but enter a tire diameter of 11.45radius for stock tires.
for fine tuning your rear end if you still want it just a little faster, or a little slower, put taller tires for higher top speed, or shorter tires for faster acceleration

My mustang engine (car and mechanic)?
I have a 2004 V6 mustang with flomaster pipes, dual exhaust from the start (that doe's not split) and I have a cold air intake. I have a question regarding my gas pedal. My car already sounds very deep, but now when i push on the gas, something in the front left side of my engine makes a consistant clicking noise- but only when i push the gas. I have no power loss. The sound is best described as an engine from an old voltswagon buggy sounds or a card in spokes. The higher the rpm's the louder the noise. Does this have something to do with the air being pushed through something? Engine prob? Any ideas of what this could be from you mechanics out there? Is this something i can just fix myself? Should I even worry? Help

Look for any leaks or holes in the surrounding tubing of the engine or clean the engine and maybe you will get lucky and find where the problem is located.
