Trigonometry help, 10 points~!?
I'm having a headache trying to figure out this answer....
"From a helicopter flying at a height of 1625 m, the angle of depression to the landing pad is 36 degrees. How far is the pad from the helicopter?"
1. The answer at the back of the book is 2764.6 m.
2. I'm not sure if they are asking for the hypotenuse or the base of the triangle or the opposite side from angle 36.
3. I used cosine on the calculator because I thought that I had the adjacent side of angle 36.
4. My formula looked like this: 1625/cos36, but my answer was 2008(can't remember, something like that...)
Could someone help, is my formula wrong, or is the textbook wrong?
point H = helicopter
point L = landing pad
point G = point on ground directly below helicopter
Obviously, the line HL is the hypotenuse of a right
triangle. Since the angle of depression (ie. the
angle from a horizone line down to the hypotenuse
is 36 degrees, the angle of the triangle is
angle GHL = 90-36 = 54 degrees
Another way to seeing this is that the angle of
elevation from the landing pad is:
angle GLH = 36 degrees
From the perspective of the landing pad, we can say:
sin(angle GLH) = opposite / hypotenuse
sin(36) = 1625 / hypotenuse
hyptoenuse = 1625 / sin(36)
hypotenuse = 1625 / .58778525
hypotenuse = 2764.615
Thus, the shortest distance from the helicopter to
the landing pad is 2764 m.
You could have done this problem from the perspective
of the helicopter (point H). In that case it would be:
cos(angle GHL) = adjacent / hypotenuse
cos(54) = 1625 / hypotenuse
hypotenuse = 1625/cos(54)
hypotenuse = 1625/ .58778525
hypotenuse = 2764.615
So, once again, you would have calculated the shortest
distance from the helicopter to the landing pad as
2764 meters.
