How hard or easy is it to control the helicopter's spot light.?
This is regarding the spot light that police helicopter's often use.
Also what do the controls look like; a joystick?
yup, it's really a joystick, sized like those craddle switches on the gaming joystick.
i can imagine some of the searchlights MAY be slaved to the movement of the camera equipment, however most of them are controlled separately.
up-down - left-right joystick, "ignite"-on-off three positions switch and focus pushbutton are the common controls for the search light.
the ease of control mainly depends on the target and helicopter relative movement. that is, if you are floodlighting a large area, it's easier than spotlighting a running person.
i can track my rescuemen ready for pickup from a 30-40 degrees off-axis in the 15deg bank turn to the hover.
i can scan the terrain in the 90 degrees section in front of me in 8 seconds defore the takeoff to make sure there are no visible obstacles.
in fact, the most difficult part of using the "spotlight" is knowing when NOT to use that, and knowing how to use the spotlight during the search. the "track" part is actually pretty easy.
