about conseravation of angular momentum?
(1) the sun's radius is 6.96 x 10^8 m, and it rotates with a period of 25.3 d. estimate the new period of rotation of sun if it collapses with no loss of mass to become a neutron star of radius 5 km.
(2) explain why a helicopter with just one main rotor has a second smaller rotor mounted on the horizontal axis at the rear. describe the resultant motion of the helicopter if this rear fails during flight.
(1) Because angular momentum is product of moment of inertia by angular velocity, the law of conservation of angular momentum for our problem means that angular velocity is inversely proportional to the moment of inertia. Because period is also inversely proportional to angular velocity, the period is directly proportional to the moment of inertia. Moment of inertia for sphere is proportional to MR^2. Because M does not change, it is proportional to R^2, but then period is proportional to R^2 too. So ratio of new period t to old period T is equal to square of ration of new radius r to old one R: t/T = (r/R)^2 and t = T(r/R)^2. Convert T=25.3d into seconds by multiplying by 86400, and do not forget r = 5km = 5*10^3 m. You will get t in seconds.
(2) Because initially angular momentum of the system helicopter - rotor was 0, it should remain 0 in absense of external torque. So, helicopter would rotate in opposite direction to main rotor so that total angular momentum were 0. Smaller rotor provides this external torque by interacting with air. Without small rotor helicopter would experience this rotation we described earlier. You can see this effect in movies when someone shoot the rear rotor and helicopter begins descend increasing its rotation in opposite direction to main rotor.
