Nitro RC hard to start and stalls.?


I recently put together my first RC truck. An HPI Savage SS 4.6.

The problem I'm having is, it is very hard to start. I've installed the Rotostart and it's even hard to start with that.

I've tried new glow plugs, so that isn't the problem. I have the high mix adjusted so that the temp at the glow plug is around 250 deg after running it for awhile. I'm running it a little on the rich side to conserve engine life. I'm more of a basher then a speed freak.

A clue to what the problem might be is another problem I'm having. When I come to a stop it idles fine for a few seconds then seem to choke out and stall. I thought it might be the low mix but sometimes it idles fine. It's usually after I've gone full trottle and slowed down to turn or come to a stop. The engine will idle fine for a few seconds then I can hear it start to spudder and I know it's about to stall so I'll feather the gas to keep it going.

I know it must be a tuning issue, but I'm not sure what needs to be tuned.

Don't be afraid to lean it a little. The maximum temp of 270 is just a reference and the engine can be pushed past that number safetly. If you have it running at 260 after a good amount of running time that is safe.

If you are convinced the high speed needle is just right and where it should be then your mixture is probably fine but you're Idle speed needle is probably too low. Try increasing the idle speed 1/16th turns until you can apply full brakes and not have the engine cut out.

Once you've done that successfully run it and test the temp, if the temp goes up at all from your previous settings, richen the high speed 1/16th turns until the temp returns to normal.

I know it seems like a long proccess but if you have to constantly restart your engine as as result of braking it's well worth the time.
