Hydroplane Boat
8ft boat powered by jet ski motor?
i built an 8ft hydroplane and i got a 300cc jet ski motor im planning on installing it, it sounds like it would work, any imput? also does anybody know if jet ski motors can get wet? because the back of the boat sinks down when accelerating which would get the motor pretty wet.
I know that many people read this forum, and there are a lot of people who "over power" boats, that in some way make the boats less seaworthy. By seaworthy, I mean SAFE. I would need many more details on the hydroplane that you have built to know for sure, but I'd bet that a 300cc engine will overpower the boat. If the boat "sinks" down when accelerating, A jet with it's weight and "thrust" so far aft will exacerbate that tendency. I just wouldn't do it. However, there may be "hydroplane experts" who know for sure if an 8 ft boat with a 200 pound payload (engine/fuel and equipment) would be safe both structurally and from the point of view of speed and control. I've see small hydroplanes with 15 HP outboards that where overpowered. It's just my opinion, but I do have 35 plus years of experience both study and training in engineering (college degree) and as a working marine mechanic.
Addressing the "get wet" part of your question, I know that some spray or splash can be mitigated but outright immersion in a no.
