Is it possible to determine how much force a jet of compressed air will generate?
I am attempting to calculate how much force a jet of compressed air (actually co2) will generate when expelled at 40 PSI through a 1/4th inch tube underwater ...is there any way to calculate this?
I don't think you are asking the question you really want answered.
force = pressure x area
area = pi r^2 = (1/4)(pi)(d^2)
You have the pressure of the compressed gas so you can figure one force (the one generated by the compressed air of CO2) at the end of the tube. But, of course, there are other forces.
If you are under water, there is the pressure of the water. That varies linearly with depth and acts in opposition to the pressure of the gas.
(water masses 1 gram per cubic cm so at the surface of the Earth, the pressure at a depth of D cm is (0.001)(9.8)D Newtons/cm^2. You can covert this to psi:
