physics speed of a jet propulsion squid problem?
Squids rely on jet propulsion, a versatile technique to move around in water. A 1.5 kg squid at rest suddenly expels 0.10 kg of water backward to quickly get itself moving forward at 3.0 m/s. If other forces (such as the drag force on the squid) are ignored, what is the speed with which the squid expels the water?
Express your answer using two significant figures.
this s a conservation of momentum problem
before ejecting the water, the squid was at rest and had no momentum
therefore, since we exclude all other forces, the conservation of momentum holds, and we know the total momentum will always be zero
so we have
momentum before = momentum after
0=mass x velocity of squid + mass x velocity of water
0=1.5kgx 3m/s +0.1kg xV
where V is the velocity of the expelled water
4.5 kgm/s = -0.1 V
V=-45 m/s; the minus sign means that the water moves in the opposite direction from the squid
