king tiger tanks
Did M26 Pershing Tanks or IS2 Tanks ever go up against King Tiger Tanks.?
My main question is above but I would also like to know your opinion on which of these 3 tanks listed you think was the most effective, Cheers John
The records of the German heavy tank battalions would seem to indicate the IS-2 engaged Tigers (of any variety) only about 10 times during the last 18 months of the war. This is probably an indication of just how rare a Tiger was on the battlefield.
The IS-2 IMHO unlike the Tigers had a clearly defined requirement, doctrine and tactical organization and for the most part was used how it was intended. The Tiger's were assault tanks that ended up due to circumstances being used for the most part as tank destroyers - a role for which they were hopelessly ill-suited.
The IS-2 was much lighter than any of the Tiger's which considerably enhanced its battlefield mobility and range. Endurance was at least twice that of the Tiger II. The 122mm L48 D-25T gun was based on the 122mm A19 Corps Gun and was devestating in the tanks intended assault role. Frontal armor was effectively immune from the common German infantry-anti-tank guns of the time such as the 7.5cm PAK-40 and after a few tweaks provided a high level of immunity from the 8.8cm L56 of the FLAK 18/36/37 and Tiger 1. Typical for Soviet tanks the IS-2 was relatively simple to manufacture in mass quantities and to keep alive in the field. Crewing an IS tank was considered an honor and only the most seasoned tankers were assigned to them, with the crew having no less than 2 officers and 2 non-commissioned officers per tank.
Negatives for the IS-2 included a limited ammunition load - for both main and machine guns, slow rate of fire for the main gun due to the heavy seperate loading ammunition and problems with the early AP rounds. Crew accomodations were to the usual Soviet wartime standards. Initial problem with the glacis plate cracking when hit with even modest caliber rounds (76.2mm) were solved by mid-1944 while German armor cracking problems only continued to get worse as the war progressed.
Only 20 of the T26 tanks of the Zebra mission saw combat in the ETO out of about 250 delivered to Europe before the war ended. Beyond the pathetically small number employed there was no doctrine in the U.S. Army on the use of heavy tanks, so they lacked a clearly defined role.
In Elsdorf the first T26 knocked out in action "Fireball" had been disabled by a Tiger 1 with 3 hits at a range of about 100 meters. One round entered through the coaxial machinegun port, whipping about inside the turret and killing 2 crewmen. The second shot hit the muzzle break. A third shot glanced off the upper right turret and took off the open commanders hatch. The following day a T26 knocked out a Tiger 1 and two Mk IV's in the same vacinity. The Tiger was hit 4 times at 900 yards range. The first shot was a T30E16 HVAP which wrecked the final drive, the 2nd shot was a T33 AP round which penetrated the turret causing an explosion. The other two shots were HE to get the tank burning. The Mk IV's were taken out at 1,200 yards with T33, one round each. Another T26 was knocked out by a Nashorn 8.8cm L71 at around 300 yards, the round penetrating the hull front, passing between the drivers legs and setting the tank afire.
The T26 was lighter than the Panther but wider and underpowered which restricted its mobility on the battlefield. The T26 had roughly the same power-to-weight ratio as the Tiger I. Both vehicles were criticized as underpowered. The Tiger II was much worse. The T26 at least enjoyed lower ground pressure. The Tiger II of course is famous for its thick armor and powerfil 8.8cm KwK 43 gun. Less famous are its failings - mechanical complexity, high building cost and long building times, short operational range, poor mechanical reliability. The numbers built because of these shortcomings were puny. In my opinion the Tiger II should never have been produced and was unsuitable for use in sustained combat operations or for wartime production.
In terms of their employment during the war the T26 and Tiger II had virtually no impact. On that basis alone the IS-2 would have to be regarded as the most successful. By the end of the war each Soviet Armored Corps had at least one IS-2 regiment attached - numbers the German's couldn't hope to match or counter. The IS-2 was available in useful quantities, with well trained crews and a well defined doctrine to which the vehicle was specifically suited. The IS-2 proved invaluable in reducing heavily fortified German towns and cities as the war drew to a close.
The T26 did not come into its own until it got a new engine post-war and became the medium tank (M46) that it really was.
