What's wrong with my RC glider motor/battery?
Brand-new Kyosho Stratus Sports 2000S RadioControlled glider.
Came with DC Peak Charger and 8.4V-1800mAh Ni-MH battery. Instructions said to set charger to 1.8A, and charge battery til the charger's red light stopped blinking, about 50min. It quit blinking after about 5min.
Took glider out, got all set up, then discovered the motor wouldn't really run. It kicks in for about a second and then quits. (We're trying to run it "full throttle" for take-off, as per the instructions.) I figured the battery was actually NOT charged. Went back home, repeated the 5min. charge cycle for about 1 hour (I unplugged then replugged the charger every time the red lite stopped blinking, thinking the charger was somehow faulty). Got the glider out again, and lo and behold - same old problem.
Did more experimenting now - I get the motor to come on and stay on at about 10% throttle, but above that it dies. Voltmeter says the battery's putting out 8.59V.
What's wrong?
The individual cells in the pack may be unbalanced (some having a higher voltage than others), causing the charge cycle to terminate prematurely after sensing a false peak. Ideally, NiMH packs should be slow charged initially to "form" the chemistry, and periodically there after to "voltage equalize" the individual cells. For an 1800 mAh battery, a 150-200 mA little wall plug type charger connected for around 12 hours should do the job.
Also consider seating the brushes by placing the motor in a glass of water sitting next to the fuselage, and run at slow speed while initially discharging the battery for one cycle. After drying, lube the motor shaft bushings with a small drop of PTFE oil.
