Best way to wire up an LED system?
I am building a headlight kit for my Traxxas RC Car, and I can't quite decide the best route to take on wiring it up.
My first option is to use a proper voltage system i.e. a 10mm High intensity LED has an optimum voltage range of 3.5V, so 3 AA's without a resistor would work, but in the frame of an RC car this could be bulky.
So, my other option is to wire the set up to a 9V, using resistors to prevent overvoltage failure.
What would be the best resistor to use to get max lighting out of this unit without killing the lifespan?
I did a trial with a 1/2 watt resistor and it took too much power away and the light was dimmer than expected.
Any ideas from electrical guru's?
Thanks Bob, I have considered that. Wiring it directly to a plug and putting it into the receiver channel 3. I did finally get it plugged up to s 9V last night...works great...but too many wires!
why not just use the cars battery?
On my RC car, I use 2 white 10mm LEDs for headlights and 2 "normal size" ultra bright red for the tail lights.
My car uses a 8.4v pack. To each LED I ran a 820 ohm 1/8th watt resistor (you could use a 1/4w but I have 1/8th as stock resistors as well as some 1/16th watt), I connected all of these to the power switch.
Someday, I am going to get around to putting a set of LEDs on the F/R servo so that backup lights come on in reverse and forward driving lights when going forward.
