how to make a FAST model sailboat? it has to be no wider than 3 in. no longer than 12 in. no deeper than 2.5in?
we are making a model sailboat for school and it has to win a race!! dimensions: no wider than 3"

no deeper than 2.5" from top of hull to bottom of keel
MUST HAVE at least 1 sail and may have motor...

While the fastest sailboats are multi-hulls or catamarans given the width constraint of 3" I would suggest you model a sailboat on a proven existing design like a Laser. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_(dinghy)
If you have any woodworking skills you could make the hull out of a small piece of pine and the mast and boom from some dowel. The sail could be made of nearly anything and a centerboard and rudder could be fashioned from any flat pieces of plastic. To secure the rudder to the hull drill a hole through the end of the hull and insert the rudder shaft through to the top deck so it can be steered.
If you are not good at wood working you could try making the hull out of some high density styrofoam or Tyvek board using a sharp razor blade to cut the hull shape. Take the dimensions of the 'real' Laser from the link I supplied and reduce the width to 3" and all other dimensions by a similar factor (hint: the scale of your model would be nearly 1 inch = slightly less than 1 foot).
If you use styrofoam or Tyvek I would coat the bottom with something that will dry smooth and not dissolve in water like caulking or better yet epoxy.
The Laser is a sailboat that is raced in Olympic competition and it is fast and will plane up on the waters surface (in case you did not read the link on the boat).
