what would happen if a clutch on a nitro r/c engine was improperly installed?
bought a used traxxas t-maxx. found that clutch was improperly installed and that the retaining spring (the spring cup that goes around the clutch shoes) was not installed and the spring shoes were just kind of dangling inside the clutch bell. the power of the car when running did not seem to be affected by it though, which was wierd. the car still popped wheelies and I did not notice any lag in engine rev to car movement. time.
basically need to know if there is some serious damage that can result from this.
There wouldn't be any real damage done.
Just have a look at the clutch shoes for any signs that they've become worn. And if you see a thick coating of black dust on the inside of the clutch bell it's possible the shoes might be worn.
But I can't imagine you would have any problems, as worn clutch shoes would affect the performance. So it should be ok.

How to Tune Nitro Engine Version 2
my rc nitro engine stopped and would not turn when using pull cord?
i stripped the engine and found a small flat piece of metal stuck in the crank shaft i cant see where it is from also the connecting rod from the piston is very loose is that normal?? are spares avalible it is a fs 12ss engine any help info appreciated i cant race my boys now my car is broken again!!!!
Sounds as if you've broken a piston or liner. I'd imagine that the spares will be freely available (is it a HPI engine?) contact the distributor for your country and find out where you can order them from.
However, just as the last person said, especially for a .12 you may be as well getting a new engine, if something has broken inside you're only really going to be able to save the crankcase and carb. It's a good bet that your bearings will be shot to bits with fragments of metal in there, the piston will be ruined, the crankshaft is likely to be either slightly bent or scratched to hell, the conrod is likely to be damaged also. By the time you've found and ordered those parts it's likely to be cheaper to buy a new engine.
