Rescue Helicopter Crashes Into The Ocean
PHYSICS HOMEWORK HELP?
In an action movie, the villain is rescued from the ocean by grabbing onto the ladder hanging from a helicopter. He is so intent on gripping the ladder that he lets go of his briefcase of counterfeit money when he is 130 above the water.
If the briefcase hits the water 6.0 later, what was the speed at which the helicopter was ascending?
130m = 1/2gt^2
130/4.9 = t^2 = 26.53, sq-rt = t = 5.15 secs
6 - 5.15 = 0.85 secs
0.85/2 = time up 0.425 & time down to original release = 0.425 secs
0.425 x 9.8 = velocity of ascending helicopter = 4.165 m/s
