How to start off in the world of hobby rc cars?
I am fairly technically minded, have a good grasp of static modelling but would love to get into hobby rc. I am thinking about petrol or nitro preferably with a pull start if possible and would like to hear the opinion of informed hobbyists re which model should I begin with?
I am not adverse to spending money although I don't want to spend megabucks as I'm fairly likely to crash more than once! Terrain will be fields and tracks so a buggy? To be honest I'm guessing so please help.

My most recent acquisition, and one that i will recommend to anyone who will listen, is the thunder tiger MTA4 s28. It's a big, fun to drive, monster truck. The 28 engine and two speed box are not super quick, but certainly quick enough. Its a big 1/8th beast and it handles offroad really really well. It also has a smaller brother, the s18 that i've heard good things about, and a bigger brother, sporting a 50 engine. Depends on your budget, but all of them are review pretty well. It is not a racer. It can be, with a few mods, but stock it is certainly more apt are bashing round a field, than handling tight corners. The big downside is parts, thunder tiger are not slow, but not quick either. Expect 5/7 day waits on parts, as opposed to 2/3 days from other companies.
If you did want a buggy, i would try something like the hyper 7. Parts for it are everywhere, and it is a good beginner buggy. The 21 engine in the base model is quick enough to be going on with, and should you ever want to race at your local track then these are not to bad. Certainly, you won't just blitz through (unless your an especially skilled driver) but they can be competitive.
Perhaps a truggy? A friend recently got the hpi trophy truggy, which is a nice piece of kit, so far. Again, parts are easy, its pretty quick, and with minimal effort/mods you could race it at club level.
Finally, if you want something backpack sized but still silly fast then traxxas do a 1/16th scale (small) truggy and truck. Both of these can do 50 mph plus with the right batteries. The advantage being you wont need an people carrier to get them to the field/track. The disadvantage being that they are fiddly to work on, and handle off-road much worse than their large counterparts.
Everyone who does this sort of thing will have their own opinion. I mean, i run a mugen MBX4 buggy, which is seven years old now, and i will stop when it literally disintegrates.

I own both as well and I'm here to tell you that you can't buy a better pair of rc cars. Both have there place and both are at the top of their game.
