What is an interesting fact about Corsairs...?
They are a kind of pirate.

Specifically, they were the legally licensed French privateers. They were issued Lettres de Course - literally "racing letters" or "letters of the course," - comparable with the Letters of Marque and Reprisal issued in England.
An interesting fact, then, is that they were not technically considered criminals in their own country.
A more interesting fact might be that there were two famous female Corsairs, Jeanne de Montfort and Jeanne de Clisson. The first was a woman-in-spurs who led a force of armed women in several battles, including one in which they - with no male assistance (thought nearly impossible in those days) - destroyed a tactically significant British encampment.

are pirates and corsairs the same thing?
I'm doing a project on corsairs and I wanted to know if they were the same as pirates. I read on wikipedia that they were another name for pirates, but I'm not really sure.
they are not the same - corsairs went with a "Lettre de Course " so were officially allowed to chase foreign ships France was at war with, similar to a Privateer - an allowance that was issued by other states as the US and England (the most famous English one is Sir Francis Drake)
Pirates were not in possession of such a letter and were therefore more severely punished when caught as they did not act as a ship of their government
