Hi,
lots of misinformation out there, let's try and clear some of it up…
1. Independent research companies like Consumer Reports list the Prius as the family sedan with the highest mpg- 44 mpg according to CR's April 2008 auto issue.
2. The Prius is also listed by CR as the vehicle with the highest owner satisfaction index for the fourth year in a row. 92% of Prius owners would either purchase another Prius or recommend one for purchase. April 2008 auto issue
3. The Prius is listed as the overall "greenest" vehicle by CR, also in the April 2008 auto issue.
4. There is no truth to the rumors that any owner has ever paid to replace their nickel metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery. There have been NiMH replaced due to accidents and owner abuse or modification (one guy drilled a screw into his NiMH trying to install a big subwoofer).
5. The NiMH is not the standard 12 volt battery that all vehicles have that must eventually be replaced in every vehicle.
Yes, if you look online (like at that Yahoo Prius group that talks about replacing a battery) it seems like it's an issue.
However, they are talking about replacing the 12 volt battery, not the NiMH hybrid battery.
The 12 volt system essentially only powers the headlamps, saves radio and navigation presets, and provides the energy to start the electrical portion of the hybrid system when you press the Start/Power button on the dash. There are a couple of other things, like the power plug in the armrest for your phone or iPod, but you get the idea.
6. The Prius is the most advanced hybrid on the market and, despite the myths being spread, actually has less parts and less moving parts than a standard gas-only vehicle.
The Prius has no starter, no alternator, no mechanical power steering pump or power steering belt linked to the internal combustion engine (ICE), the brake pads should last the life of the vehicle because they are rarely used due to the regenerative braking motor (the MG2), and the Power Split device (also called a continuously variable transmission or CVT) is a sealed unit whose fluid is not changed for 90,000 miles.
The electrical portion of the hybrid system is self-regulating and self-maintaining and does not require maintenance.
7. There is simply no truth to the myth that the electrical portion of the hybrid system is going to break down sooner than an ICE-only system will.
Any good electrical engineer will tell you that an electric motor will last much longer than a gas engine. An electric motor essentially only has one moving part and is not prone to the wear and tear of an ICE.
8. The current record I know of is over 360,000 miles on a Prius with the original NiMH and hybrid system. It is easy to find Prius online with over 100,000 miles on them with no issues.
Common sense says if these things were failing, it would be all over the news. Especially with people focusing on them so much with gas approaching $4.00 a gallon.
9. There simply is no truth to the Prius/Hummer myth that states the Prius pollutes more than a Hummer because of the NiMH battery stack production.
The story was written by a Connecticut college paper who took a very flawed study and wrote it as fact, without bothering to check the facts. I have posted extensively on the details on this myth, do a search here in Answers.
10. The Prius actually costs a little less than .11 cents per mile for each 100,000 miles to maintain at a Toyota dealership. It does not cost more than a standard vehicle, actually less than many standard vehicles.
That .11 cents includes gas at $3.50 a gallon, oil changes and all other regular scheduled maintenance up to 100,000 miles and tires.
It does not include purchase cost of the Prius, options, financing, or insurance for the obvious reason that these will vary depending on the purchaser.
11. It is a mistake to equate the Prius with a vehicle like the Corolla, Civic, or Focus.
The Prius is available with more features, both standard and optional, more safety features, and has more ride comfort and space than small cars.
It is like comparing a Civic to an Accord or a Corolla to a Camry.
