Carbon offsetting?

What's the point of carbon offsetting when it doesn't really change anything except the way a country looks on paper when detailing how much estimated carbon a country has produced for that year?
We pay taxes through the nose now, especially on cars and petrol, and it's worse for all those people who have on/off road cars like Range Rovers, Toyota Land Cruisers and so on.
I know that we pay other countries that cannot produce as much carbon as we do to claim it as their own but really, what is the point of that when we should be reducing carbon rather than paying someone to take it?

I totally agree. Its a scam by governments and big corporations to get more money out of Joe Blogg while doing zilch in terms of positive action that might hurt their own wallets. Like the pyramid scheme, it only helps the agents that pass along the risk, not the poor suckers who buy into the dream. You can't dissolve carbon emission by buying "points".

which method is more petrol conscious?

Hi guys, appreciate if anybody could advise me on this.

if i'm travelling along a road and spot a red light, and i'm travelling in 5th gear (top gear)

would it be more petrol conscious if i

1) put it in netural and let my car roll along

2) stay in gear

the answers i've gotten have always been divided by these two options. . . so i would like to confirm.

i've heard that staying in gear cuts off the fuel injection (cuz the natural speed of the vehicles keeps the engine rotating) but staying in netural removes alot of inertia. . .

which is the best?

Thanks!
does the transmission work in such a way that if i'm in gear and the rpm is higher than netural-gear-idle rpm, does the modern-day fuel injection cut off, and thus, saving more fuel?

Coasting will save fuel, as the engine RPM will drop but is not a safe thing to do as you may not have time to put back in gear if you have to react to a road situation where you need power.
