CO2 rocket/ bottle boat?

i am doing an experiment in my chem. class. where we have to take a bottle mix vinegar and baking soda to make CO2 and the race it in a gutter. i need a way i can drop in the baking soda and cap my bottle fast, i tried putting in the baking soda first than vinegar but i lose to much CO2 while capping the bottle, what are some good ways to get the 2 ingredients in fast and i can cap it fast?

You need a small bottle or a tube of some sort which holds the vinegar, and which you can drop inside the bottle holding the soda. Then put the cap on the bottle, and when you are ready to go, invert the bottle to empty the vinegar out of the tube.

RC Rocket Racing Boat

I need to build a small scale boat for a school project! Help!?

My materials are limited to:

- 30 x 30 cm square of plastic styrofoam (It's about 1 cm thick)
- Tin foil
- White Glue
- Tongue Depressors
- Plasticine
- A Candle

And the engine is a test tube with a smaller glass tubing poked through the rubber stopper. When I have to race it, there will be water in the test tube; as the candle below the tube heats up the tube, water turns into steam, and gets forced out the tube, moving the boat, rocket-like.

What I have to do is first, is create scale drawings of the boat; I have to research my own design. What is most efficient?

And then, I have to race my boat; the faster the time, the higher the mark I will get, as I am competing against all of my classmates.

What are some good design details that make a good boat? These boats are small; they will be racing in a straight line in a small, bathtub like racetrack, so what really matters the most to me is how to keep it moving in a straight line, and fast.

Thank you.

You have three goals when designing a speed boat: light, thin, and stable.

You want the boat as light as possible so that the engine (the steam rocket) can move it quickly and so less of it will be immersed in water (causing more drag).

A thin boat (when looking at it from above) will also cut down on drag.

Stable means it won't tip over when floating. The problem with making your boat too thin is that it will tend to tip over. You also need to make sure that you use enough styrofoam so that it won't sink when loaded with the steam rocket.

Perhaps a catamaran design will allow you the best compromise. See the picture in the link below.

Be sure to test your boat before racing it.

Good luck.
