Tips for a slower recovery?

I'm a rower, port, 2nd year. I'm newly 16, around 5'10, and 125 lbs. I'm in 4th boat, but I know that I can make 3rd. A constant criticism made by coaches is my recovery. As a stroke, I have an instinct to go as fast as possible. In order to keep a rating of 32 without burning out early in the race, I hasten my recovery. They tell me to slow it, but when I do I'm rushed back up to the catch by the guys in my boat (4 of whom, including the coxswain, are novices). They also tell me to increase the speed of my drive, but no one else in my boat can pull as hard as I can and they fall behind. As you can see, this is quite the debacle. Any suggestions? Thank you.

First, one reason why when you guys try to bump up the rating it gets out of control:
A common problem i that you people rush the crap out of the top of the slide. Reason being, you feel vulnerable. Your arms are out and the boat is tricky to set, so you rush to the catch as quickly as possible, especially at the last 5 inches or so. I know you didn't mention this in your question, but the first thing you need to do is check everybody's foot stretchers. You're probably like whaaaat will that do??? If everybody's oars are at different angles, some people will have to move at different speeds to get to the catch = bad pressure and a lot of rush! So what you do is make sure everybody's hip bone is lined up with the bolt on top of the rigger when you're sitting at the catch (I hope that makes sense). What this will do is transfer all that weight that is being buried into the bow from people who's feet are too far back. When weight crashes to the bow is slows you down and your power isn't effective.
OK SO to the actual question, a lot of that has to do with the guys in your boat not puling their weight, and it's their responsibility to get their act together, and your coxswains job to motivate them to do it. If nothing improves, you've got to talk to your coach about this. Have you asked him/her what you posted?
If you get your hands out a little bit quicker and press a little bit harder, this will also help you get the rating up. I know it sucks when they're like "32, but slow slide." sound dumb, but that basically means that they want you to move up the slide at a constant velocity rather than crashing the hell out of it. The longer the slide, the move run, the more speed out of each stroke. That's why you have to press even harder, to make up for the long slide
WOW that was a lot of typing, I hope some of it makes sense!!! There's never one reason for something, there's multiple things each person on the team can do to fix the problem, so don't be so hard on yourself!

Rowing Regatta Help?

When I row at a fast pace, I always seem to be a little slower with the rest of the boat. When I try to move faster, though, I rush and do not actually go up to the full catch position. Is there anything I can do to move faster while at a race pace without getting too out-of-hand?

My mens heavyweight four is having the same problem. Plus we have are biggest regatta (Dad Vail) this weekend.

you answer it yourself the problem is rushing. One thing we are ding to try and change this problem, is I (the coxswain) use to call the start really loud and intense. Now i call it way calmer at the star because they all have the pre-race jitters anywayz and if i'm up there screaming at them thats just going to make them loose control more. So talk to your coxswain and tell he maybe to try using a calmer voice. Pay more attention and control your strokes.

good luck
